1. What is the latest version of E-DAS software?

Ambient, Digi-Trend, Milker, DLoad, and CEM are at version 5.50. Additional modules such as the Access Database Module, AIRNow Module, Zero Adjust, and Web Toolkit are also at version 5.50.

2. What are some of the changes in the 5.50 release?

Click here to view the Readme file for the changes in 5.50

3. Will the E-DAS Ambient and DigiTrend software run on Windows 2000?

Version 5.33 & above have been tested to run on Windows 2000.

4. Will the E-DAS Ambient and DigiTrend software run on Windows XP?

Version 5.40 & above have been tested to run on Windows XP.  Version 5.50 has been tested to run on Windows XP Service Pack 2.

5. Can the configuration settings be uploaded from the logger to the software?

The configuration can be downloaded from the software to the logger by building the strings, but the configuration cannot be uploaded from the logger to the software.

6. If the logger has been configured manually, can I poll data back to the software?

You can poll back the data only if the configuration settings between the logger and software are identical. If the software settings are not set up to match the logger settings, the data will not be polled.

7. Can I set the Base Average Interval to 1 minute and the Average #1 Average Interval to 4 minutes?

You cannot set two averages with values that fall under the same limit. You can use one minute average, one auxiliary average, and one hourly average; or you can use one minute average, one hourly average, and one daily average. The limits for each data type are as follows:

Second data: 5, 10, 12, 15, 20, or 30 seconds
Minute data: 1, 2, 3, or 4 minutes
Auxiliary data: 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, or 30 minutes
Hourly data: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, or 12 hours

8. Can I configure two different auxiliary averages for a site with an 8800 logger?

No. The auxiliary setting for a site with an 8800 logger is set up on the Site
Information screen. This is a global setting for that site, and it allows only one auxiliary average to be configured.

9. If I am upgrading my 8800 logger to an 8816 or 8832, can I change the setting from 8800 to 8816 or 8832 on the Setup site information screen?

No. The site will have to be deleted and re-entered. Before the site can be deleted, the EPA codes will need to be deleted first. Second, delete the calibration setup. Third, delete all of the parameters, and then, finally, you can delete the site. You can now re-enter the site information with the new setting for the 8816 or 8832, then re-enter the parameters, calibration settings, and the EPA codes.  The 8832 logger type option is only offered in version 5.40 & above.

10. I need to replace the existing pc with a newer pc. Can I copy the program directory on the existing pc over to the new pc?

No, the software will have to be reinstalled from the CD on the new pc to make sure all of the correct files are installed and registered that are not located in the program directory.

11. The driver for the brand of modem I am using is not listed. Which one should I use?

If you are using a US Robotics 56K modem, then select the ussr336.mdm. If the driver for your modem is not listed, then select the Hayes 96.mdm or the Standard.mdm, which are generic drivers.

12. I set up the calibrations in the logger, and I am polling for calibration data, but the calibration report is blank.

If the calibration settings were put in the logger manually, but were not put in the software, then the software does not know what calibration information to ask for during the poll. The calibration settings need to be set in the software as well as the logger in order for it to be able to poll the calibration data. The best way to ensure the software and logger settings match, is to set up the software then build the strings to the logger. This also minimizes how many times you have to manually enter the settings.

13. When I set up a calibration in the E-DAS software and select the digital outputs, it does not give me a place to set the output equal to one or zero.

The setup for the digital output settings as well as the digital input settings is located on the Setup site information screen. Both settings default to normally open, but can be changed to normally closed if needed.  Select the line # for the digital output that was set in the calibration and select if it is normally open or normally closed.  Also included are fields for labeling the digital outputs.

14. DELETED.

15. An error occurs when you attempt to download a math channel.

16. Why is there a Purge program running in the Scheduler?

The Purge program is a setting that is hard-coded, but will only run if it is enabled. It only affects minute data, and can be enabled under the Set system parameters screen. It is labeled "Days before purging minute data", with the default set to five. If you check the box titled "Enable purging" it will activate the Purge program in the scheduler to run at 1:30 every morning. It will purge the first day of the last five days of minute data that was collected. If you do not collect minute data, and the "Enable purging" is checked, it will not run. If you do collect minute data, and the "Enable purging" is not checked, the Purge program, will not run. If you would like for the minute data to be purged, but a storage time of five days is too short, you can increase the days that you need for it to start the purge.

17. How do I remove a task from the Scheduler?

In the E-DAS menu, select editors / Schedule tasks. Select the line number of the program you wish to remove, so that it is highlighted. Click the Remove button at the bottom and the task should no longer be listed. Click Ok to save the settings.

18. How can I keep the automatic poll from going back in time, and asking the logger for data that is no longer being stored?

Select Setup / Set up polling tasks from the main menu. Select the polling program that you want to change the time on and click Edit. Set the Last Poll Time up to a preferred date and time you want the automatic poll program to start polling. Click Ok to save your changes. Click Cancel on the next screen to exit and go back to the main menu.

19. How can I edit or delete non-continuous data?

The Add or Edit Offline Data Editor will need to be used in version prior to 5.40.  Version 5.40 & above now have a Non-Continuous Data Editor which will allow you to edit multiple days at once.

20. I am trying to copy the raw data to the validated data, but it doesn't seem to be replacing the incorrect data.

The raw data will not copy over to the validated database if the validated data is still there. The validated data must be delete first before the raw data can be copied.

21. I want to make a new data directory, but I don't know which files I need to copy over.

In the E-DAS menu, select Copy files under the Utilities menu selection. To copy only the configuration files, choose Configuration Files and Secondary Configuration Files, then select the drive and folder you want to copy to, then click Copy. If you want to include any data, choose Data Files, then select which type of data you need and the dates the data ranges over by Day, Month, Quarter, or Range.

22. How can I make a backup of my data directory?

There are three ways to copy the data directory to a backup folder.
1. Through the Windows Explorer, you can manually copy the complete data directory, and paste it to the new destination, which could be a different hard drive, zip drive, tape drive, or network drive.

2. You can have the software to manually copy the files by opening the E-DAS menu, select Utilities/Copy files. Select what type of files you would like to make a copy of, select the destination of where you want the files copied to, and click Copy. If you are selecting data, you will also need to select what type of data and date range.

3. You can also have to software to automatically copy the files by scheduling the ZIPBKUP as a task to run in the E-DAS scheduler. You will also need to setup the Edas.ini file so the ZIPBKUP task will know where to write to. To do this, open the Edasamb directory through Windows Explorer, then find the file Edas.ini. Double click the file and it will open with Notepad. Find the section [ZIPDRIVE], and the next line is DIRECTORY=. In capital letters,
type in the path, including the drive letter, to the directory you want the backup to be written to. The next line down is PERIOD=. It defaults to PREVIOUS, but can be changed to CURRENT or BOTH. Previous is for the previous month, and current is for the current month. After the changes have been made, select File and Save.

23. Is it vital for me to make a backup of the configuration files?

Yes. It is very important to make a backup of the complete data folder. This will also allow you to have a backup of the data as well as the configuration files in the case that the polling pc has a hard drive crash. If the polling pc has a hard drive crash, and you do not have a backup, you will have to set the configuration up from scratch.  If you do not need to backup the data, you can copy only the configuration files only to a backup folder.

24. Can I poll the logger with a laptop, and then copy the data files over to the central system?

No, because the data files do not append to each other. If there is an existing file with the same name as the file you are wanting to copy over, then the file that gets copied into the data directory will replace the existing file, and cause the loss of previous data for that month.

We do provide a Portable Data Retriever software package that can be ran on the laptop and will allow you to poll the data and bring it back to the central.  To get more information and pricing on this software package, please contact our Marketing Dept.

25. How can I purge a status log without printing it on paper?

On the Reports menu select Status reports. Choose the type of status report you want to purge. Then, select the sites you want to be included. Check the box next to "purge data after printing", and select "view." Click Ok. Once the report has opened in WordPad, close WordPad to purge the file.

26. If I delete a channel and replace it with a new channel, will I still be able to run data reports on the old channel?

No, once the channel name changes, the software no longer has a way to access the data. When the channel name gets deleted, it is also removed from all of the report lists; therefore, it cannot be selected and the data cannot be accessed.

27. Can the format of the reports be changed by the end user?

No, the reports are hard-coded into the software, and cannot be changed through the software.

28. The Monthly report has blank places where the data is not showing up.

If a value is attached to an invalid flag the value will not be displayed. When you run the data report with all flags, it displays the invalid value along with the invalid flag(s) that shows why it is invalid.

29. On the hourly data report the data is being flagged with a "B" (meaning bad status) flag when all of the data for the hour is not bad.

The "B" flag does not invalidate data for the entire hour. It is included on the
report to show that at least one minute of data during that hour was flagged for bad status.

30. When I run a data report it is blank, but when I run a data report with all flags the values are displayed. Why does one report display the values and the other report doesn't?

If a value is attached to an invalid flag the value will not be displayed. When you run the data report with all flags, it displays the invalid value along with the invalid flag(s) that shows why it is invalid.

31. Can I run an annual report for my hourly data?

The annual report was released in version 5.42. In version 5.41 and below, the next available option is to run the Monthly report for twelve months.

32. Does the new re-engineered AIRS format allow you to include 5-minute SO2 data?

This option was released in Service Pack 3 for Version 5.34. Version 5.33 and below do not have this option.

33. When generating the AIRS output, I want to change the name of the AIRS file, but it says it is an invalid filename.

Certain symbols cannot be used in the name of the AIRS file. Symbols that are not accepted are:

?   Question Mark

/    Forward Slash

\    Back Slash

*   Asterisk

<   Less Than

>   Greater Than

 |    Pipes

34. How can I create an AIRNow report for previous days?

Select Manual report under the AIRNow menu selection. Select the site(s) and parameter(s) for the needed date range. Select File and Ok. Assign the required file name to the file for the date it was ran, and save the file into the data directory. If the file needs to be transferred, you will need to move any AIRNow files with a later date on them out of the data folder and put them into a temporary folder. Select Transfer manual ozone mapping file from the AIRNow menu. The program will transfer the file that was created last, so you will need to create the file and transfer it before creating another file. Once that you have finished creating the needed files, move the files that were previously taken out of the data folder back into the data folder.

35. Can the AIRNow file be transferred in binary?

No, the file is created and transferred as a text file.

36. Can the AIRNow file be created and transferred with 15-minute data?

No, the AIRNow can only create a file that holds hourly data. However, version 5.40 & above is able to transfer files with 15-minute data that is created by the program FTPDATA.  FTPDATA has to be set up in a polling task to be created just the same as the AIRNow.

37. What steps do I need to take to add PM2.5 to the OMS or AIRNow Report?

For version 5.40 and below, go into the polling task that creates the OMS or AIRNow report. Select the PM parameters for the needed sites for the needed sites in the report parameters list on the left side of the screen by highlighting them. Click OK when finished. Then go to Select pollutants, and click on the parameter in the Pollutants column. All of the parameters that were set up in the polling task will show in the Available Parameters column. Select the needed parameter by double clicking it, and it will show up in the Selected Parameters column. When finished click OK.

For version 5.41 & above, go to Select pollutants, and click on the parameter in the Pollutants column. All of the parameters will show in the Available Parameters column. Select the needed parameter by double clicking it, and it will show up in the Selected Parameters column. When finished click OK.  Then go to Setup FTP/AIRNow files and edit and existing program, and highlight the PM2.5 parameter from the list so that it will be added to the AIRNow file that will be created.

38. When I open the Access Database file, it keeps asking if I want to convert or open the file. Can I convert the file?

Not in version 5.34 and below, the Access Database file is in an Access 97 format. If you open the file in a newer version of Access it will ask if you want to Convert Database or Open Database. If the file is converted the Ambient software will no longer be able to update to the database after the poll runs. You will need to select Open Database in order to keep the database in the correct format.  In version 5.40 & above the database file can be converted to 2000 or XP.

39. What type of data will the Access Database Module accept?

The Access Database Module will only store hourly and auxiliary data. It will not store minute or calibration data.

40. What version of Access does the Access Database Module use?

The Access Database Module that is used with Ambient version 5.34 and older uses Access 97 format. If the Access Database Module is being used with Ambient version 5.40 & above, Access 97, 2000, and XP can be used.

41. Is the Access Database Module in version 5.40 & above compatible with the Access file that I am currently using?

No, the Access Module in version 5.40 & above uses a different format, and is not compatible with previous versions; therefore, you will need to delete, move or rename the currently used Escdata.mdb file from the data folder so the 5.40 or 5.41 Access Module can create a new file on the next automatic poll.

42. Can minute data be displayed during a calibration in the real-time display in Digi-Trend Site?

Yes. As long as the scheduler is running and the poll is occurring every minute, it will update the minute data on the display.

43. When I open the logbook, I receive a message stating, "The last Purge was performed a certain amount of months ago, proceeded by the date. You are now due for your next Purge. You should perform a Purge as soon as possible." How do I perform the Purge without loosing any information?

Click OK to the message. When in the Logbook select Tools / Purge to Archive. Enter the date for the data prior to this that you want to purge, and give the archive a name.  You will receive a message asking if you are sure you want to purge all entries prior to the given date, to the file name that you assigned it. If you are sure click Yes. It will give you a message telling you how many entries were purged successfully from the current Logbook and the path of where the file can be found. Click OK. This file can now be accessed with Microsoft Access. If you are using Access 2000, you will need to select open the database instead of converting the database.

44. How does the Milker software or Portable Data Retriever software work in conjunction with the Ambient software?

The Milker software polls the logger with a direct connection, and creates response files with the extension of .rsp. These files will need to be copied into the data directory of the Ambient system. The next time the Ambient system polls, it will update the files to database.

45. I have upgraded the polling pc; do I have to install any of the previous versions before I install a later version?

No, all of the changes and updates that was made in previous versions and the service packs were included in all following versions.  The only one that will need to be installed is the latest version that you have received.

46. Does the CLAIRE use flags attached to the data that is polled by the Ambient system?

The CLAIRE system uses valid data only, and disregards the flags. If the data is flagged invalid it is not used by the CLAIRE system.

47. Can the CLAIRE system page me if a value is to high?

No, the CLAIRE system does not have paging abilities.

48. Is there a place in the CLAIRE system where you can change a value if it is too high?

No, values cannot be changed in the CLAIRE system. This has to be done in the Ambient system, then re-run the Voiceaqi report and the CLAIRE system will update the next time it gets the report.

49. Can I set limits in the CLAIRE system so that I will not use a value if it is too high?

No, limits cannot be set in the CLAIRE system. This has to be done in the validation screen for each instrument in the Ambient system.

50. What is the user name and password for the Digi-Trend software?

Type in a user name (any user name will work) and leave the password blank, then click the OK button.

51. When I go into the validation screen of the instrument, I cannot see the Return button at the bottom of the screen.

The screen resolution is set to small, most likely 640x480. The E-DAS software requires a screen resolution of 1024x768. Once the screen resolution has been changed to the correct setting you will be able to see the Return button.

52. Can the CLAIRE system email reports?

No, the CLAIRE system does not have email capabilities, but Ambient 5.42 and above has email capabilities.

53. Can the CLAIRE system send a page or email on high values?

No, the CLAIRE system does not have paging or email capabilities, but Ambient 5.42 and above has the ability to page or email on data flags that are poll back with the data. The hourly data can be setup to be flagged if it goes over a certain value.

54. I am unable to generate an AIRNow file with decimal places, the values are always in whole numbers

Version 5.50 will allow the AIRNow file to be generated with decimals in the data with the exception of Ozone, which will continue to be generated in whole numbers
